Jocelyn Green’s second novel in the Heroines Behind the Lines series, Widow of Gettysburg, officially released this week! Her first novel, Wedded to War, was recently nominated as a finalist for a Christy Award in two categories. We were excited for an opportunity to ask her some questions and have her share about her background, inspirations, insights, characters, and more. Take a look:

How did you get started writing? When and why did you decide to start writing fiction?

I always knew I wanted to be a writer, from the time I could first hold a pencil. I wrote captions in my coloring books to tell the story. So choosing to major in English in college was a natural for me. After college I was an editor at a nonprofit on Capitol Hill for a few years, then I married my Coast Guard officer husband and we moved to Alaska. At that point, I began freelance journalism, which became a full-time job for several years. It was also in Alaska that I came up with the idea for my first book, a devotional for military wives. I needed one myself, so decided to recruit several other military wives from other branches, and Faith Deployed was born in 2008 (to make a long story short).

To be honest, I never thought I would write fiction because I didn’t think I had any new stories to offer. But when I was conducting research for my nonfiction book, Stories of Faith and Courage from the Home Front, I came across so much inspiring material, I began to consider the possibility of depicting the stories through historical fiction.
