5 Terrific Things About Cowgirl Trail + Giveaway!

Posted on April 3rd, by rivernorthfiction in 5 Terrific Things for Tuesday. 35 comments

We are so excited to announce the release of Cowgirl Trail, as of April 1st! In honor of this exciting release, we have 5 terrific thoughts from author Susan Page Davis on her writing of the book, along with 5 copies to GIVE AWAY!Cowgirl Trail, by Susan Page Davis

Cowgirl Trail tells the story of Maggie Porter, daughter determined to save her family’s ranch. When the cowboys at her father’s ranch go on strike, she decides she will drive the cattle to market. Can the new cowgirls make it to market with outlaws determined to stop them?

For a chance to win your copy, answer this question in the comments below: If you could pick any profession to try other than your own, what would it be?

(Winners will be notified Thursday, April 5th.)

Below are 5 terrific thoughts from Susan Page Davis answering that question and more!

1. If Cowgirl Trail had a soundtrack, what song(s) would be on it?
Definitely the lullabies (English and Spanish) and hymns that the night riders sing to the cattle in the story, and maybe the song “Cattle Call” for some yodeling fun.

2. What was your favorite way to take a break during the writing of Cowgirl Trail?
Go out and watch our horses. They lend inspiration when I’m feeling far from Texas! We have two, both in the 4-to-5-year-old range. Asphodel is a black (well, dark brown but looks black except in direct sunlight) Tennessee Walker gelding, and Indie is a reddish bay mare of uncertain lineage.

3. If you could pick one character from Cowgirl Trail to meet in real life, who would it be?
I think Carlotta Herrera. There’s never a dull moment with that senorita around!

4. What portion of Cowgirl Trail was your favorite to write?
Probably the part about the striking cowboys following the herd that the women are driving. There were some fun moments in the boys’ camp.

5. If you lived during the time of Cowgirl Trail, what profession would you want to have? Cowgirl, or something else?
At Maggie’s age, I probably would want to be out there on the range–but I’d be the wrangler, not a cowgirl.

I would like to and at some point in the future plan to be a natural childbirth educator and doula. Helping women make healthy, educated decisions for themselves and their babies is something I’m very passionate about.

  • Lisa Nelson

I like working in a library, and I would’ve liked working in a library then, too!

I don’t think I could handle a one room schoolhouse, too many kids at different levels!

I might try working at a general store, but I’m not a salesperson, so I wouldn’t be successful. I might be able to make deliveries (if the horse was agreeable.)

    This is a good question!!

Please include me in the giveaway!!

    Thank you!!

What interesting choices, Lori and Lisa! Sounds like you both have interesting careers now and could find similar employment in the 1880s. Thanks for taking part!

  • Jackie Wisherd

My chosen life career was as a teacher..I think I would have been a teacher no matter what years I lived in.

    • http://www.susanpagedavis.com Susan Page Davis

Jackie, some people have that innate gift. I would probably be writing, too–even if only a journal.

Enjoyed the interview with Susan. Good question. I’ve been watching the old TV program The Virginian with hubby. So I’ve been immersed in cattle ranching. This is one of the very best weekly westerns of the 1960′s. I think I’d like to run a boarding house in town. What exciting stories I’d hear there.
Thank you for the chance to win your latest novel.

    • http://www.susanpagedavis.com Susan Page Davis

Oh, I loved The Virginian too! Westerns were my favorite shows as I was growing up.

  • Joye

during those times, I would have liked to have been a shopkeeper of ladies wear and accessories.

  • Charity L.

I would love to be entered in this giveaway! I think one profession I would have loved back then was a storeowner or a dressmaker. Maybe a librarian:) Thanks so much for this giveaway!

  • Daphne Tutor Webb

Definitely astronaut. Actually it was being that or a writer and well, we know which one won. But if I wasn’t afraid, and I mean deathly afraid, of flying or of heights, then I would be an astronaut. How cool to flying amongst the stars.

  • http://AnnLeeMiller.com Ann Lee Miller

    Ha! I’d be a published author. :)

  • misskallie2000

I am retired now but if I could go back in time I would love to have owned a book store and be an author. I have been reading for over 60 yrs and it has brought me much joy. I can go anywhere in the world without leaving home in a book.
Thanks for the opportunity to enter giveaway.

  • http://www.susanpagedavis.com Susan Page Davis

Great answers. When I was a girl, I wanted to have a store, too. That or a hotel. That was long before I worked in a store and learned how grueling it can be. Daphne, I think you have the highest aspirations. And to those of you who would like to be writers (or who ARE writers but haven’t yet reached publication), I wish you success.

  • Carol Gehringer

I would have loved to be a cook (and owner) at the local eatery (not saloon), serving healthy food in a wholesome environment.
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  • http://www.amyhaleauker.com Amy

I am already a writer and a cowboy on a commerical cow operation (don’t care for the word cowgirl), so if I had to choose again I think I would be a natural scientist of some sort, prowling around on the planet and discovering all of the mysteries and miracles. Right now I am hatching salamanders, frogs, and toads on my windowsill!

    • http://www.susanpagedavis.com Susan Page Davis

Amy, I love it! Amphibians are so much nicer than reptiles, IMO.

  • Merry

I would pursue interior design, I love decorating. Thanks for a chance!

  • Jeanette Fallon

    Lawyer or teacher

  • Frank Zumpf

    Rodeo star

  • Wendy Marple

    Meteorologist!!! The weather fascinates me.

  • Rebekah Ballard

    I’d like to own/operate a bookstore/coffee shop. They’re my two favorite things…reading books and drinking coffee! :-)

  • http://www.susanpagedavis.com Susan Page Davis

Wow, what a variety! Frank, if I decide to write about a rodeo rider, I know who to brainstorm with, right? Hi, Rebekah! I’m with you on the bookstore/coffee shop. I think this shows that we all have wide interests, beyond our regular routines.

  • April Dangerfield

I would love to try being a tack/feed store owner. I’ve always thought that would be a great job. Always surrounded with wonderful leather smells, and meeting interesting animal owners.

  • http://rivernorth Patricia G. Rhymes

If I could change my life and be any profession I wanted, I would be a farrier, or a horse rancher. I love horses and love to spend my time with them.

  • http://magenmyshield.blogspot.com Lisa H

Right now I’m unemployed and desperately looking for work, but I would have to say I would run a boarding house or a cafe. I love to cook and bake :)

Thanks for having the giveaway! Peace and blessings to you.

  • Joyce Schultz

Right now I’m unemmployed due to being cut from my teaching position. I love teaching & love 1800 history! I would love to be a one room school teacher in the 1800′s or a homemaker on a ranch with cows & horses. Thanks for the giveaway! I keep dreaming through books! :)

  • http://www.marthawrogers.com Martha Rogers

I’m retired now, but I’ve taught junior high, high school and college level home economics and English. I always wanted to be a teacher or a nurse. If I could go back, I’d like to go into nursing or some medical field. I always have a doctor in my books and love medical stuff. If I went back to 19th century times, I’d like to have book store or be the librarian. Love those books. :)

  • http://www.twinwillowsfarm.com Pegg Thomas

I’ve always wanted to try my hand a taxidermy. :) I know, I’m a bubble off plumb, but honestly, I think it would be fun!

  • Lori Lochner

I always thought I wanted to be a teacher, so I could watch young minds learn. Always wanted to write so maybe I would open a newspaper office and put my writing skills to work writing local happenings and news about open range issues, ranching issues, that two men had a showdown in the town square, etc! Course I would also love to just be living on a working ranch, especially if there were lots of horses that I could love and care for.

  • http://www.susanpagedavis.com Susan Page Davis

I am amazed at the variety of answers. Thanks everyone for coming by and taking time to read and respond. We’ve got everything from a meteorologist to a taxidermist now, and several ladies who perhaps should join forces and open a bed and breakfast or a boardinghouse! And we know our livestock will be well tended and the kids will have a good education with this group hanging around. It looks like there will be more Morgan family stories coming your way in the future–Yippee!

I am living my dream profession, writing, editing and teaching about writing. As a youngster, I did think I wanted to be a teacher though, and actually did everything to qualify except apply for my certificate!

Congratulations on your book! It sounds wonderful. I had not known about the cowboys’ strike.

  • http://www.onedesertrose.wordpress.com Linda

I’d like to work as a neo-natal nurse, as I LOVE newborn babies! Can’t get enough of them.

I’m interested in your book, as I’ve never thought of women driving cattle. Should be enlightening!

  • Jo Legat

I wanted to be a nurse or a cowgirl when I was growing up. No idea as to why since I lived in a big city and had no experience of living in the country at all.

  • Marissa E.

Since I don’t have a profession, I hope to become an elem. ed. teacher once I graduate college.

  • http://diggingforpearls.blogspot.com Jodie

Oh, I can’t wait to read this new saga in the Texas Trails series.

As for the question…I guess my profession for the 16 years has been home educator. My next profession I hope to have is writer.

Blessings and congrats on your new book Susan.

    Blessings,
